I thought long and hard before buying beds for my boys (4, 2 and 1) and my main priorities were a safe sleeping environment and durability. I was lucky to find organic twin mattresses and sheets that they've been sleeping on, directly on the floor, but I wanted to get them proper beds. Most kids beds (or any beds for that matter) are made with paints that contain VOCs or possibly lead, or formaldehyde and other unsafe chemicals in the woods and glues. I also wanted to purchase beds that would last a long time. Not a fan of "transitional" or toddler beds. Once the kid gets use to a bed... they have to be moved again! So I wanted a low-profile bed that was made of a safe, durable material, with no plastic-y smells or sharp corners. And then it hit me: a toy manufacturer that makes kid's beds! I contacted them about the materials used and they said that their products were made with a low-density polyethylene or Polypropylene plastics which do not contain Bisphenol A (BPA). Furthermore, according to their email, "Many toy manufacturers [...] make the claim [that] their products are "phthalate free". Step2 chooses to make the accurate statement that our products are compliant to the CPSIA phthalate requirements as independent, CPSIA test labs cannot and will not state a product is "phthalate free". The soft plastic materials used in our products are routinely tested and are compliant to the CPSIA phthalates standards." So crossed that off my priority list. Next was durability. The beds are a hard plastic with rounded corners and built-in guard rail "windows" that discretely keep toddlers safely inside and still look cool to the older set. I liked this style of car bed over others since it was a streamlined, single color, minimal fuss design. (i.e. not too many gaudy or cheesy stickers). And since I needed 2 for my boys, the size was great (maybe 5-8 inches bigger than a twin mattress on either side) so fitting 2 in a small room is not that bad. Assembly was OK, basically 4 'frame' pieces that were kind of not flush and had to be really pushed together to get the screws in (it is possible with just a screwdriver... and some help ;o) and then the wheels which were more time consuming but well worth the effort. Overall these beds are supposedly safe, and hopefully, long-lasting in durability and style!

we waited months for this bed to come out. we already had the stock car bed and loved it, but the corvette was much cooler as i am a huge chevy fan. im normally not one to rate products but had to say something on this particular purchase. i ordered it the day it was released (aug 2.) got it within the 10 day period but when it arrived the box was destroyed and pieces laying out in truck. refused the shipment, and had another sent. didnt get the next one until a week ago (sept 5.) again the box was torn up but was tired of waiting so i accepted it. opened the box to find the boards laying directly on top of one of the side pieces which was scrathed all down size. i love the bed. but as much as it costs, you would think they could spend a little more on better packaging, so it doesnt get destoyed/scratched on the way to its destination.

Comments about Step2 Corvette® Toddler to Twin Bed with Lights™:

Really great bed, easy assembly and switching between toddler and twin bed. My son loves it, helped with transition to sleeping in his own room. Started with the toddler bed which was great because it wasn't an intimidating change in size, and doesn't let him fall off the sides. Then switched to the twin which I expect to last well into his teens.

The only thing is that it collects a lot of dust and dirt inside the bed and is too big for small rooms.

the headlight seem to be too long to be to screw in their sockets (step 26 of assembly). The tail, seen in picture 24 of assembly, contacts the car body when it is inserted. Loosening the headlight assembly (installed in step 22) does not rectify the issue. Any advice?
      A shopper on Mar 11, 2014
BEST ANSWER: I have this exact same problem. Customer service tells me that it may have been an issue with the molding of the parts and is sending out replacements. To be honest, I'm not certain this will rectify the problem. In the instruction manual picture 21 looks like it has an indentation in the space for the headlights that would facilitate the installation. My front bumper has no such indentation. My solution was going to be to drill a hole into the bumper behind the headlight assembly, but I'd rather not have to do that. Anyone have any suggestions?
I just realized there are 2 version of this bed. One with head-lights, and one without. I mistakenly purchased the one without for our son and regretting our decision. Is there a way to purchase the pair of head-lights only as an add-on to the version without lights?
      Homer L on Apr 8, 2013
BEST ANSWER: Please contact us today 4/8/2013 before 5:00PM @ 866-429-5200 and we can assist you in changing your order to the version with lights. If you are unable to contact us before end of day, you can also purchase the headlight kit for the same price by visiting http://www.step2.com/p/Corvette-Bed-Headlight-Kit
Is this bed plastic or wood?
      ICascan on Nov 26, 2014
BEST ANSWER: It's a heavy duty plastic bed... We have had ours for a year - no issues - very sturdy.
How hard is it to convert the bed? Does it have to be taken apart entirely ?
      Bianca R on Jul 14, 2014
BEST ANSWER: Not sure I understand your question but let be try to respond. This corvette bed is a complete bed. There is no conversion from an existing bed to this bed. The Corvette bed is a frame and mattress all in one box. It does need to be assembled and it takes some tools to do so. If moving from one room to another it may require disassembly and reassembly. Our grandson loves the bed. It has built in side rails to keep children from rolling out.
I had this bed years ago in blue, sold it, and want to buy another in blue, this time with headlights, if possible. Where should I go to find it?
      A shopper on Apr 9, 2013
BEST ANSWER: I only thought this bed came out in Aug '12 and in red. I did see a similar bed in black on-line. I don't remember the make, but it was way more expensive. I love the lights. My Grandson used it as a night light when he goes to bed.
I just set up this bed but Can't figure out how the lights work. THey don't seem to be able to go on and are just plastic?
      Crystal E on Jul 14, 2013
BEST ANSWER: Crystal easy fix. Just unscrew the back of the battery. makesure there is not a plastic stem coming out. It may be on there so the battery does not come on doing shipping. Next push in the front of the light. You should see three l.e.d lights. You can leave the flashlight on and in shots off in 15min. Put the light in the hole and turn like a door knob till you can not turn. My son takes them out and uses it as a flash light at night.
Can a safety rail be attached to this car? Is it necessary?
      ilona p on Jun 26, 2013
BEST ANSWER: Im not sure if you could attach a safety rail or not but I don't think one would be necessary. The sides come up pretty high and if you use the toddler bed setting then there is definitely no need for one. I've used both settings my son is now 3 and loves the bed. Works great just be aware it is a pretty big bed it could only go in the corner of his room or it would take up the majority of his room.
son would love this.. is it awesome to have?
      Alyssa H on Jul 1, 2014
BEST ANSWER: I want to buy this bed as a gift and send it to another country. Can you give me the aproximately weight and size of the box where it's shipped so i can ask for the price of the shipping abroad?

      Thank you!
I read the specifications of the Corvette bed and it says DO NOT use a water bed or all foam mattress. Do you know why this is the case? I was planning on purchasing a all Foam mattress.
      Nick_MI on Jun 24, 2014
BEST ANSWER: The bed (Corvette) when fully assembled and using a twin mattress uses 2 pieces of MDS wood. The waterbed would likely be too heavy and could also slip in between joints and tear or puncture. I think the concern with the foam mattress may just be an issue of rigidity. If properly supported underneath it should be fine. You may just have to alter the wood boards or add more for better support. Overall I have fallen asleep in the bed with my 4 year old a few times and at 6' and 185 lbs. the structure has not shown signs of stress. As mentioned before you just may need to modify it to work. I think it will be fine.
In the picture, it looks the foot of the bed is higher than the head. Is that so?
      Eliza on May 24, 2014
BEST ANSWER: Sorry this was a gift for my grandson so I'm not able to really answer your question, but from what I recall it's all the same size. It's a beautiful bed, and my grandson loves it.
How does a toddler with a twin mattress get in and out of it? They just climb up over the side? Do they hit their knees very often on the plastic?

      Thank you.
      A shopper on Mar 26, 2014
      BEST ANSWER: Hello,
I bought the corvette bed for my son, when he was 2.5yrs, he is now 4. He climbs in and out of the bed very easily and does not hit his knees. He climbs in and out of the bed from either the side or the front.

In addition, my 1 year now climbs up on it from the front as it is the lowest point for him, then he climbs off from either the front or sides. He also does not hit his knees and maneuvers around quite easily.

I hope this answers your question.

      Best.
Should I use a bunky board?
      A shopper on Jun 8, 2013
BEST ANSWER: Everything you need comes with this bed (except the mattress). You do not need any additional boards or anything. The bed can be used with a crib mattress for a toddler. For an older child, the boards (which are included) have to be reconfigured to support a twin size mattress. By the way, the twin size mattress needs to be a bunk bed mattress (so that it's not too thick, you don't want the mattress taller than the sides of the car).
For the Twin bed setting, does it need a box spring?
      A shopper on Apr 2, 2013
BEST ANSWER: We have not used it as a twin bed yet, but with how its made to convert from a toddler to a twin I see no reason to get a box spring. The support pieces get moved to provide support for the mattress. On side note so far we have been very pleased with our purchase. Our son loves it.
Has anyone used a 10" mattress with this bed and if so, does it look too weird? I know most use I think 8" but, I have a 10". I don't want it too look silly. If anyone has used a 10" and has a picture or description of the look, I would greatly appreciate it.
      A shopper on Jan 17, 2014
BEST ANSWER: Any mattress sticks up a bit. A 10" won't look silly. I have a standard twin mattress on it and it sticks up a little, but looks great!
Can a mattress 80cm X 1.95cm fit on this bed?
      Eleni P on Jan 4, 2014
      BEST ANSWER: This bed uses a standard twin mattress size 38" (96,52 cm) x 74-1/2" (189,23 cm) x 7" (17,78 cm).
I have been looking everywhere for this bedding. Does anyone know where I can get it??
      Kayla E on Jul 21, 2013
      BEST ANSWER: Hi Kayla,
I bought some black minky fabric and made a crib sheet. It's easy to make. Go online and watch a you tube video. Then I covered rectangle foam pieces with black and white checkered fabric, and wedged the foam pieces between the mattress and the sides of the vette bed, so the child wouldn't roll off during the night onto hard plastic. Then made a "cars" blanket with black and white checkered backing to go over the crib sheet. It looks great and our little guy was so excited!
Our SUV is too small to fit the entire box so we are thinking of taking everything out. What is the biggest parts of the bed? and its approx dimensions?
      JSpence on Jul 5, 2013
BEST ANSWER: Sides the biggest parts about 72" long . We have an SUV ( mersedes Ml 320 and Toyota Seena ) , could easy feet our cars .
When we got bed they had an option ship to home for $3. That was my chose if they still have this option i recomend it.
If not ,You just have to take everything from boxes.
Bed comes in 2 boxes ( one with small part and another with sides)
Good luck, my boy love this bed.
Where can i purchase the coordinating bedding for this bed ?
      A shopper on May 1, 2013
BEST ANSWER: We went with a navy blue with a very tiny pale blue stripe from target. I did an iron on transfer of our car on the sham. I search all over and could not find anything but the cartoon Cars and did not like that with the bed. We enlarged pictures of our car to poster size to pull it together. Our Grandson loved them
hi. i ordered a twin mattress which has14 inch thickness . if i buy this product, can i use with this mattress?
      serdar t on Feb 16, 2015
BEST ANSWER: The mattress we have is 14 inches. It definitely sits high, but we actually like it better that way. The mattress will be even with the sides of the car. If you need the sides as a guard rail, it may not work. My two rear old (now 4) was fine. He still LOVES his car bed and so do his friends!

what size of the twin bed I need to buy to make sure there is no gap between the mattress and bed? Thanks
      A shopper on Feb 22, 2014
BEST ANSWER: Any standard twin mattress will work. You do not use a boxspring. I have a twin foam mattress from Ikea. It is thinner and allows my son to sleep deeper in the bed which prevents him from rolling off.
what is the size of the twin mattress needed for this bed?
      gary g on Jan 11, 2014
      BEST ANSWER: This car bed uses a standard twin mattress size 38" (96,52 cm) x 74-1/2" (189,23 cm) x 7" (17,78 cm).
Can you please provide the dimensions of the mattress that I need to use with a toddler? We currently have to cribs but their mattresses are different sizes so I'd like to know if I can use them with this bed or need to purchase new mattresses if they won't fit.

      Thank you!
      Cindy on Jul 12, 2013
BEST ANSWER: We tried the crib mattress but 2 year old grandson used the race track as a place to stand up and dance. Crib mattress made it hard for him to get in and out of bed by himself. We are now using a twin mattress that is 8 inches high and it fits great. His jumping on the bed and caused a bumping noise because boards overlap. I place a folded quilt under the mattress and that ended noise. We love the bed and it has made a big difference in getting him to go to sleep/bed.
      I hope this helps.
Is there any way I can make this bed more durable? My 4 year old son doesn't go to sleep unless I lay down with him and I'm afraid I'm going to damage it. I see there are some holes like for sand has anyone tried that?

Please explain why Step 2 Corvette color rubs off on my son's sleepwear? I am very concerned with the quality of this product. Color from red plastic transfers on to the antibacterial towel, soft paper towel and soft toilet paper as I wiped it clean. I tested the same cleaning approach with other plastic toys and none of them transfer the color. Now I see the red color on my son's white sox and white sleepwear every time he wakes up. Any detailed safety and chemical composition information about the color and plastic will be highly appreciated. At this point I plan to return this bed due to poor quality.

Can I personalize the licence plate with my sons name?
      A shopper on Jun 3, 2013
BEST ANSWER: It came with a sticker that said "My Corvette" on it. I don't like stickers cause with a 2 1/2 yr old I'm sure it will be ripped or peeled off. So I did not put them on. I was thinking of having his name spray painted on it, but have yet to do so. There is enough room on the back of the car to do it, but you would not see it in the small space on the front. I also looked into getting a real or replica license plate and put it. They were a little expensive.
He loves his bed and the lights are a great night light.
