I thought long and hard before buying beds for my boys (4, 2 and 1) and my main priorities were a safe sleeping environment and durability. I was lucky to find organic twin mattresses and sheets that they've been sleeping on, directly on the floor, but I wanted to get them proper beds. Most kids beds (or any beds for that matter) are made with paints that contain VOCs or possibly lead, or formaldehyde and other unsafe chemicals in the woods and glues. I also wanted to purchase beds that would last a long time. Not a fan of "transitional" or toddler beds. Once the kid gets use to a bed... they have to be moved again! So I wanted a low-profile bed that was made of a safe, durable material, with no plastic-y smells or sharp corners. And then it hit me: a toy manufacturer that makes kid's beds! I contacted them about the materials used and they said that their products were made with a low-density polyethylene or Polypropylene plastics which do not contain Bisphenol A (BPA). Furthermore, according to their email, "Many toy manufacturers [...] make the claim [that] their products are "phthalate free". Step2 chooses to make the accurate statement that our products are compliant to the CPSIA phthalate requirements as independent, CPSIA test labs cannot and will not state a product is "phthalate free". The soft plastic materials used in our products are routinely tested and are compliant to the CPSIA phthalates standards." So crossed that off my priority list. Next was durability. The beds are a hard plastic with rounded corners and built-in guard rail "windows" that discretely keep toddlers safely inside and still look cool to the older set. I liked this style of car bed over others since it was a streamlined, single color, minimal fuss design. (i.e. not too many gaudy or cheesy stickers). And since I needed 2 for my boys, the size was great (maybe 5-8 inches bigger than a twin mattress on either side) so fitting 2 in a small room is not that bad. Assembly was OK, basically 4 'frame' pieces that were kind of not flush and had to be really pushed together to get the screws in (it is possible with just a screwdriver... and some help ;o) and then the wheels which were more time consuming but well worth the effort. Overall these beds are supposedly safe, and hopefully, long-lasting in durability and style!

we waited months for this bed to come out. we already had the stock car bed and loved it, but the corvette was much cooler as i am a huge chevy fan. im normally not one to rate products but had to say something on this particular purchase. i ordered it the day it was released (aug 2.) got it within the 10 day period but when it arrived the box was destroyed and pieces laying out in truck. refused the shipment, and had another sent. didnt get the next one until a week ago (sept 5.) again the box was torn up but was tired of waiting so i accepted it. opened the box to find the boards laying directly on top of one of the side pieces which was scrathed all down size. i love the bed. but as much as it costs, you would think they could spend a little more on better packaging, so it doesnt get destoyed/scratched on the way to its destination.

Comments about Step2 Corvette® Toddler to Twin Bed with Lights™:

I have twin boys that hated going to bed! They fought us at bedtime and we thought there would be nothing to get them to go to bed on time. Then we found the Step 2 Corvette beds. They fell in love with them immediately! After assembling them they wanted to play in them, and now they are up the stairs before we can even say "bedtime!"

The bed is very easy to assemble, we had no issues, and even had extra screws in case something went wrong. The delivery was great, we were called ahead of time to ensure things went smoothly. I would recommend this bed for any parent with a little boy that fights bedtime.

The tail, seen in picture 24 of assembly, contacts the car body when it is inserted. Loosening the headlight assembly (installed in step 22) does not rectify the issue. Any advice? Mar 11, 2014

We have had ours for about 6 months and my son loves it. We went ahead and paid extra for the lights and I'm so glad I did. He loves them as a night light and they shut off after 15 minutes. Kelly y: Crystal easy fix. Just unscrew the back of the battery. makesure there is not a plastic stem coming out. It may be on there so the battery does not come on doing shipping. Next push in the front of the light. You should see three l.e.d lights. You can leave the flashlight on and in shots off in 15min. Put the light in the hole and turn like a door knob till you can not turn. My son takes them out and uses it as a flash light at night. Jul 15, 2013

Step2Staff: The middle light on each light kit has an area to insert 2 AAA batteries per light. Once batteries are inserted, the lights can go back in and then you tap (gently push) the middle light to turn on. Please refer to step 23 of the instruction guide. Jack S: The small light on each side should light up and stays in for about 20 minutes. You push on the light itself and should hear it click on. Jul 16, 2013

Ricardo L: have you placed batteries in the lights? If so, all you have yo do is push the light in and it should turn on. If that dosent work then they might be defected and you have to send them back. Hope this helps. Jul 17, 2013

Myrtle P: Im not sure if you could attach a safety rail or not but I don't think one would be necessary. The sides come up pretty high and if you use the toddler bed setting then there is definitely no need for one. I've used both settings my son is now 3 and loves the bed. Works great just be aware it is a pretty big bed it could only go in the corner of his room or it would take up the majority of his room. Jun 27, 2013

Taylor D: I bought a low profile mattress ( ikea) maybe 6 inches thick that is very comfortable for my 4 year old. It sits well in the bed and allows the frame to act as railing. You don't really need extra railing. And the bed sits low anyway so if your little one did happen to fall out ( not likely unless he's doing aerobics at night) he won't fall far. Jun 27, 2013

Travis R: I wouldn't think so, since the windows angle in. They also act as safety rails though. I would recommend using a full size mattress. The toddler one left gaps on the sides. Jun 27, 2013

Shannon S: I don't believe so. If you use a toddler mattress you've got the car windows that stick up about 8 inches. I haven't tried with a twin mattress yet. Jun 27, 2013

            A shopper asked: Should I use a bunky board? Jun 8, 2013
Answer this · Send to friends Good question? Yes (0) No (0)
Richard L: Everything you need comes with this bed (except the mattress). You do not need any additional boards or anything. The bed can be used with a crib mattress for a toddler. For an older child, the boards (which are included) have to be reconfigured to support a twin size mattress. By the way, the twin size mattress needs to be a bunk bed mattress (so that it's not too thick, you don't want the mattress taller than the sides of the car). Jun 10, 2013
Reply to Richard Good answer? Yes (1) No (0)
Chesley M: Not sure what a bulky board but the board provided is what you should use. My son has a twin mattress and it seems to seep in the middle... I just didn't want to go through the hassle of taking the bed apart seeing is how it took us almost 4 hours to put it together Jun 10, 2013
Reply to Chesley Good answer? Yes (0) No (0)
Geoffrey M: It is a very tight fit with a twin size mattress. I can barely put the cover onto the mattress. I would not recommend a bunk board Jun 10, 2013

rebecca ann v: We have not used it as a twin bed yet, but with how its made to convert from a toddler to a twin I see no reason to get a box spring. The support pieces get moved to provide support for the mattress. On side note so far we have been very pleased with our purchase. Our son loves it. Apr 3, 2013

            Dahlia A: Hello,
I bought the corvette bed for my son, when he was 2.5yrs, he is now 4. He climbs in and out of the bed very easily and does not hit his knees. He climbs in and out of the bed from either the side or the front.

In addition, my 1 year now climbs up on it from the front as it is the lowest point for him, then he climbs off from either the front or sides. He also does not hit his knees and maneuvers around quite easily.

I hope this answers your question.

            Best.

If anyone has used a 10" and has a picture or description of the look, I would greatly appreciate it. Jan 17, 2014

Breena M: I use the 10" on my child's bed. The mattress of an 8" sits just below the lower side panel part whereas the 10" sits just above it, but not so far as to take away from the window/door area. It sits a few inches below the tallest point on the bed. My son is 4, has had it for just over a year and we have never had any problems with him falling out of it because the mattress is a little taller. I think he prefers the taller mattress, honestly. If he had the 8" mattress he would knock his knees on the side, with the 10" he has an easier time clearing the hard plastic of the bed. Jan 17, 2014

            Kathy T: Hi Kayla,
I bought some black minky fabric and made a crib sheet. It's easy to make. Go online and watch a you tube video. Then I covered rectangle foam pieces with black and white checkered fabric, and wedged the foam pieces between the mattress and the sides of the vette bed, so the child wouldn't roll off during the night onto hard plastic. Then made a "cars" blanket with black and white checkered backing to go over the crib sheet. It looks great and our little guy was so excited!

When we got bed they had an option ship to home for $3. That was my chose if they still have this option i recomend it.

Jeorgia L: We tried the crib mattress but 2 year old grandson used the race track as a place to stand up and dance. Crib mattress made it hard for him to get in and out of bed by himself. We are now using a twin mattress that is 8 inches high and it fits great. His jumping on the bed and caused a bumping noise because boards overlap. I place a folded quilt under the mattress and that ended noise. We love the bed and it has made a big difference in getting him to go to sleep/bed.

Annette f: It came with a sticker that said "My Corvette" on it. I don't like stickers cause with a 2 1/2 yr old I'm sure it will be ripped or peeled off. So I did not put them on. I was thinking of having his name spray painted on it, but have yet to do so. There is enough room on the back of the car to do it, but you would not see it in the small space on the front. I also looked into getting a real or replica license plate and put it. They were a little expensive.

Step2Staff: At this point in time, the Corvette Toddler to Twin Bed with Lights is available in Red or Pink from Step2.com, Amazon.com, or Toys R' Us. Walmart.com carries the red version and also has a blue version of this product. This bed is rotationally molded here at our factory in Ohio. Black color is difficult to use in rotational molding, especially with a product of this size to prevent it from showing the imperfections in the plastic. At this time, we would not be happy with the quality of this product that would made if we were to create a black version of this Corvette bed. Sep 25, 2013

MarkJ asked: Hello, I recently ordered this bed from Sears Canada. The lights that came with it are just plastic fake lights, They are only about 1.5 - 2" in depth so you cannot insert AAA batteries as is described in this Q&A. Can you please explain why I wouldn't get lights for this bed? Jul 29, 2013
