My daughter (15 months) loves this kitchen. I like that you can pick green or red to go with your home decor. She plays with the phone and stove a lot. I wish there were more sounds, but I didn't want to get the larger one. Only two things I wish were different. The refrigerator door doesn't stay shut very well and the oven door stays closed too well, it takes some elbow grease to get it open. That could just be the case with mine. I assembled it during her nap (in 1 hour). Definitly use an electric screw driver. I bought more accessories to go with it because it has the capacity to hold more. It stands up well on tile and carpet and is very sturdy. I will be keeping this for a long time. I feel comfotable with the plastic curved edges opposed to wood ones with sharp edges and it's light enough to move from room to room. This kitchen is worth it, I would recommend this to a friend.

I purchased this kitchen recently for my family daycare to replace a very old Step 2 kitchen that I had. I have infants and toddlers up to age 3 and thought they would love this kitchen. Today is the third day of use. I don't think the oven door will last, since the 2 yr. olds tend to kneel on it once they open it. The 10 mo. old opens the cupboard and refrigerator doors and pushes on them so hard that I'm afraid they won't last long either. The railing in front of the dish rack is flimsy and a few good tugs will probably break it. The kids do love the sounds the burner and phone makes. I had a lot of play food and accessories already, so that makes it more fun for the kids. This kitchen is not nearly as sturdy as the old one I had, but it is more interesting to the kids. I found the storage to be adequate.

Pros

  • Durable
  • Lots of Fun
  • Quality Construction

Cons

  • Difficult to Assemble

Best Uses

  • Individual Play

Comments about Step2 LifeStyle Custom Kitchen II™:

The assembly of this product is understated. The tools recommended are inadequate (screw drivers of multiple sizes are necessary) and guide marks for screw placement are obscure if visible at all. Without pilot holes securing the screw.s their depth is quite difficult. Someone with rudamenptary mechanical skills would have difficulty assembling this product.

Comments about Step2 LifeStyle Custom Kitchen II™:

this is a great simple kitchen for my 1 year old twin girls and my 4 year old boy loves it as well. I would say assembly was medium difficulty. Pre drilled holes would have been nice, but I managed without them just fine, and I always look at assembly as a one time thing. My son loves the microwave buttons and working burner. The phone unfortunately didn't work, but step 2 customer service is amazing and easily agreed to send me a new one. thing I would have preferred would be:
more storage (make the fake drawer real or the real one bigger)
a sturdier faucet (the one I have sits loose in the hole)
    real buttons for the oven
but I would recommend this to anyone as a great kitchen for the price

Jennifer S: We bought it for our two year old, but our five year old loves it. They both play with it. We've had extended family up to age 9 play with it, so I think it would serve your purpose. (It is about 3' 1/2" -4' tall.) Dec 4, 2013

Judy W: My granddaughters are 40" and 42" tall, 3 and 4 years old and this works well for them. Dec 4, 2013

christine b: My daughter is in size 5t to Xs 6 pants for height and my nephew is 7 so not quite 4 foot and they play well with this still. It depends how tall they are. It's perfect for them and they are larger for their ages. Dec 6, 2013

Amie T: It will work, but the 7 year old will probably grow tired of it quickly. I bought it for my 2 year old and everyone seems to love it age wise, but the older they get the less they play with it. Dec 4, 2013

Dennis M: Of all the kitchens we considered, this was the best since it had "sound" features + which our granddaughter likes.
But she is only 3 years and a short 3 at that.

Elise F: I don't think it would be WAY to small. It's on the smaller side, but my (tall) almost 3 year old has to get on his tippy toes to get stuff off the top. Dec 4, 2013

Michelle S: My 5yr old daughter is pretty tall for her age and it is not too small for her. She absolutely loves playing with it- and so do the other children 5 and under who come over to play! I guess it would depend on how tall the 7 yr old is, but definitely not too small for a 5 yr old! Answer this · Send to friends Good question? Yes (0) No (0)
Ashley W: Yes, the microwave and phone both have a place for a battery and do make noises. The phone beeps when numbers are pressed and rings when another button is pressed. The microwave makes a humming "cooking" noise and also beeps when the numbers are pressed. There are also 2 pots that come with the kitchen set that when placed on the burner makes a sizzling frying sound and the other a boiling water sound. My kids love this kitchen! Dec 2, 2013

Marcos C: The buttons on the phone make a noise and also the buttons on the microwave, as well as the play stove make sounds. It is very easy to put together, however there have been many people getting larger kitchens for the same price, so I'd recommend to do thorough research on the play kitchens unless they have a great deal to offer. Rochelle H: Yes, the Microwave makes noise when you push the buttons as does the phone (it's a cordless phone) Also, the stove burners make boiling noises and have red lights that light up when you put a pan on them and press down. It's really cute and our son has gotten many hours of play out of this kitchen! Dec 13, 2013

Julie L asked: How deep is the inside of the microwave? Also, how wide? Do the plates that come with this fit inside so you can still shut the door? What is the diameter of the plates that come with this kitchen? Dec 3, 2013
Answer this · Send to friends Good question? Yes (0) No (0)
Paula S: The inside of the microwave is roughly 6"W x 4.5"D. The plates are a little over 5.25 in diameter. The cool thing is that the microwave door itself is hollowed out (for lack of a better word) so even though they don't look like they would fit, you can close the door with the plate inside because of the additional 1.5" of space. Hope that helps! Dec 3, 2013
Reply to Paula Good answer? Yes (1) No (0)
Stephanie S: Diameter of plates is 5 1/4. Microwave is 5" deep 4 3/4 wide. No, the plates do not sit flat inside the microwave, but you can shut the door because the door is cut out on the inside so the plates fit. My granddaughters love this kitchen. I have actually bought 3 of them. They love the phone and the noise the burners make. Dec 4, 2013

kristal c: I bought this kitchen last year and overall I'm happy. I can't provide the dimensions at the moment, but the plate does fit inside the microwave with the door shut. The only problem I had with the plates/bowls is that they do not stay in the holders above the sink. They always fall out so we just stack them on the ledge. Dec 3, 2013

sue p: the microwave depth is 6 inches with door shut, width is 5 inches. The plate diameter is 5 inches and yes the micro door shuts with the plate in it. Note: this is the largest plate you could possibly get into the micro. Dec 3, 2013

Kathryn H: Plates are 5-3/8 inches diameter and just fit with door closed. Microwave width is approximately 5-1/2 inches. Dec 3, 2013

Katherine S: The plates do fit, with maybe a 1/4 in on either side. The door does close, although you may think it will not when you first see it. Plates are just under 5.5 inches in diameter.

Def recommend this kitchen- a good size for my 3 year old and 1.5 year old. It's all self contained too- every cooking toy we have (play food, cake, additional dishes, etc) can all fit in the different storage spots.

Answer this · Send to friends Good question? Yes (0) No (0)
Jamie S: To cause the burners to make noise all you need to do is set the pots on the burners. The design in the bottom of the pot pushes a small button in the groove of the burner and makes a sizzling or boiling sound. While the pots on are on the burners, red lights in the burners flash/blink. The knobs click when you turn them but are not electronically linked. Nov 15, 2013

Julia G: They turn red and light up and make noise when you put one of the pots or pans on the burner (There's a little button that you can press on). Turning the knobs doesn't do anything except making a clicking sound.
My kids really love this kitchen, I highly recommend it!

Nov 9, 2013

kristal c: Numbers on pad beep like your putting in the cooking time, but there is also a popcorn button that makes sounds like its cooking popcorn and another button that makes sounds like the microwave is working and then it beeps at the end like your food is ready. These buttons makes the microwave very realistic. Dec 3, 2013

Moria L asked: I am trying to assemble the kitchen but there are no holes for the screws to go in, is that a defect in the product or is that the way it is? What should I do? Drill inside the plastic? I can't get the screws in with a simple screwdriver. Oct 11, 2013
Answer this · Send to friends Good question? Yes (0) No (0)
Step2Staff: Our screws are self tapping screws that are able to go through the plastic. You may need to start them with a hammer. Please follow the instructions or find the indents in the plastic to line up the screws correctly. We do this in an effort to ensure that no shavings inadvertently are left over in the box as a result of pre-drilling. These shavings could pose a choking hazard to little ones. Oct 11, 2013

Scarlet R: As I recall, this product was difficult to put together. I used an electric screwdriver to make holes on the dimples indicating were the screws should go. This seemed to work fine. Tanya E: This kitchen was so easy to put together just taking about 20 min. and I find it to be the best quality. My 1 year old daughter lives the sounds the microwave makes. Buy it online cause when researching I found if you buy it in store the microwave comes with just stickers and no working buttons, but you can go on steps website and buy the piece to add on for sound. Why not buy it online pay s couple dollars more to have the cutest kitchen all set to go delivered to your door. Very impressed and would recommend! The size is perfect! Apr 29, 2013

I read about this before I bought it, and saw other people complaining that the phone is not loud enough to hear. But I think its kind of nice to have a toy that isn't super loud! Jan 16, 2014

A shopper asked: Do all the white cabinets/drawers open? Thanks! Aug 16, 2013
Answer this · Send to friends Good question? Yes (0) No (0)
JAMIE H: unfortunately no. Only 2 out of the 3 open. The "drawer" underneath the sink on the left hand side of the kitchen is a sticker only. I have actually wondered why this sticker couldn't have been an actual drawer, since the sink above it is extremely shallow (like 1 inch). I wish either the sticker could be a drawer, or the sink could be deeper. However the white rectangle cabinet below the sticker and white drawer underneath the fridge both open. My only complaint is the that white drawer under the fridge can be pulled all the way out and isn't fixed in, so anything in there will surely spill out once a little one pulls it open. Hope this helps! Aug 22, 2013

AngelaR asked: Is the very top of this kitchen flat, where you could place maybe a small basket to hold accessories or play food? I can't tell from the pictures if there is actually enough surface on the very top where you could do that. Dec 9, 2013
Answer this · Send to friends Good question? Yes (0) No (0)
Rochelle H: Yes, the top is flat, but it's not large enough to place food because the fridge door opens on the only area you could do so. There is a food storage bin on the bottom right as well as the large white cupboard door and stove and fridge to store food/dishes in. The pull out drawer under the fridge is only good for play silverware - it's pretty small. We store food in the extra shopping cart we purchased. Dec 13, 2013

Aruna asked: We've ordered the step2 lifestyle custom kitchen from amazon. The first box we got didn't have the microwave button panel and we returned it and got a replacement. The 2nd one also didn't have the microwave button panel so we are returning it. In both the cases, we got a decal which is not why I purchased the product for. I would like to order the same product from step2 website this time. But I want to make sure that I will receive the microwave button panel instead of the decal. Can someone from the step2 team answer my query? Jul 20, 2014
