I bought this for my daycare. [...] the kids are still having a blast i put some moon sand in so they can mold and they love it! i have not used the water feature yet as it is just starting to warm up enough for wet kids outside! i do wish the umbrella could stay in when i put the lid on though, thats a bit annoying, but not a huge deal either.

I love the idea of this table but I was sad to discover that after spending $[...] the water leaked out from the leg holes very quickly! I read another review that said they ended up putting caulk around the leg holes so we might try that.

Comments about Step2 Naturally Playful® Sand & Water Activity Center:

This sand and water play center was purchased for my 2 year old grandchild. He really enjoys it and his 8 year old brother plays well with him when using this toy. It does get a bit messy but that's part of what they like about it and it is easy to clean up. I can put uncooked rice it the sand side if I don't like the mess. Two drain holes would have made it easier to clean. I don't like that the legs fit into holes that go though the surface where the sand and water are.

Comments about Step2 Naturally Playful® Sand & Water Activity Center:

I am very disappointed in this product! This was not a cheap $20 table so to pay the high amount to get what should be a better table and have it leak is a huge let down. Typically I am meticulous about reviews and comparing stuff but I bought this table on a whim when I found it on sale in store, so I hadn't read the reviews ahead of time to know that they leak. On top of the constant leaking making it pointless to put water in, the whole thing is made cheaply as the legs don't stay put causing the whole table to fall apart if barely touched. The legs do not stay attached to the table. I bought this at the end of last season so the store will no longer take it back otherwise I would return. I want my money back!

My son loves this water table so much, unfortunately it leaks terribly and as we're in a third floor apartment the neighbors have been complaining about getting wet on their deck. Why in the world do the leg holes need to go straight through the table?! I suppose we're going to have to do as others have said and caulk the legs. It's such a lovely table I wish they would have thought it through a little better.

Comments about Step2 Naturally Playful® Sand & Water Activity Center:

I do not normally write reviews, but this purchase was a great one. I had been doing some looking at different sand tables for our VERY active 1 1/2 year old son and decided this was the one I was going to buy. I just so happened to find this at a yard sale last fall for a small price. It was missing all of the little toys and umbrella that come with it, but was pretty certain I could get a replacements. I brought it home, cleaned it up and called to get the replacement( for a small fee, which was as simple as a phone call and they sent them in 3-4 days) my son begs to play with this on our deck. We have had dirt, rocks, sand, lime, and water It is the prefect height for him. We have had play dates and every child we have had here LOVES it!!! If you are debating on purchasing this, I would! I play on bringing it inside this winter for indoor sensory play.

JoAnna S: Purchased for my 2 yr old grandson. Very sturdy. The only con was he wanted to pour the sand into the water and it made a real mess. Would recommend to friends. Nov 30, 2013
Cristina S: We love this play table. The boys use it with or without water. The umbrella is a fantastic feature as well. Our only complaint is that the bungee cords broke within the first year. Otherwise, it has been a great toy! Jun 19, 2013
Heidi C: I chose this item because I was looking for both a sand and water table that would fit my daughter and offer room for her friends to play also. The umbrella was an extra bonus. Jun 5, 2013

Answer this · Send to friends Good question? Yes (1) No (0)
MARIA A: the plug is only on the water side. We had to calk it because it was dripping and the water did not stay in.
moreover: we had to secure the leg with screws, because with the weight of water and sand one of the leg became loose.
After these modification and corrections, our grandson and other children had a good use of the table.

Mitchel K: Buy a 50lb bag of playground sand from Lowe's or Home Depot. It is enough to fill one side and have enough left over for a refill later on. Beware if you use water in the other side, kids inevitably decide to dump it all into the sand side creating mushy quicksand. Sep 16, 2013

Carrisa D: I put in about 20 lbs of sand at a time. You can get play sand from the hardware store such as Lowe's or Home Depot for much less than online learning equipment stores such as Lakeside learning. Sep 16, 2013

A shopper asked: I was wondering how much water this table held? It is hard to tell from the picture but the water side doesn't look that big. I am trying to decide on a table for my daughter's birthday. Thank you! Apr 4, 2014

Amanda T: Really, having water on one side and a dry material on the other just doesn't work, practically speaking. Toddlers do not respect those boundaries! So, we fill both sides with water, which works great and there is plenty of room/ water for several children to play at the same time. We bought a few funnels, pitchers, watering cans, boats and our children are never ready to stop playing! Apr 4, 2014

lanette c: Approx 2 inches deep water level maybe 5 gallons of water . The sand side will hold a little more than half a bag of play sand. Christina T: It doesn't hold that much water. I've never measured but I can fill it up in a couple of minutes with a hose. You can also take the sand out and fill the sand side with water if you want more water. Both my kids play more with sand side though. Apr 4, 2014

Curious asked: What is the point of Part I for the umbrella? The lid can't be put on with the umbrella locked in by this part. May 23, 2013
Answer this · Send to friends Good question? Yes (0) No (0)
Curious: Thanks Erin. It's part "i" and unfortunately has no name in the directions but Steve's description as a collar to stabilize the umbrella makes sense. It's a white plastic ring with a screw in it. I plan to put the cover on whenever the table is not in use, so the idea of using this collar to lock the umbrella in place doesn't make much sense to me. Steve's explanation of using it temporarily instead of as a permanent lock makes sense though. I also think it may just be unnecessary. May 24, 2013

Steve G: I use it to keep the umbrella from lifting out, or leaning, not as a permanent "lock". I pull the umbrella out, split into two pieces and store underneath the cover at night. Don't push the pole "collar" too far down into the table hole or you will have issues. May 24, 2013

Tonia T: If this is the part I'm thinking of, we threw it away. The umbrella is just set through the hole and it works just fine. May 24, 2013

Curious: Thanks! I also think the umbrella is stable enough without it, but we haven't used it yet, so I'll hang onto the collar for the moment. :) May 24, 2013
Steve G: The only argument I would give for using it is in a stiff wind the umbrella can actually be lifted out of the hole without the tension provided by the ring. I've had to chase down my umbrella a few times when it wasn't secured properly. May 24, 2013
Erin B: I'm not sure what "part 1 of the umbrella" is. If you're more specific I'd be happy to answer. May 24, 2013

Marna D: We put sand in both sides and it works best that way. The sand and water made a huge mess. My kids all love this sand box- we've had it for over a year now and all 4 of my children ages 3-9 play with it (well the 9 year old only plays with it when he's helping the younger ones but still he has fun). Not sure about the weight of the sand, but we dump a new bag in there about once every 3 months and I can move it one side at a time on my own- with help it's easy to move. I think we put 4 bags of sand in initially (but I can't remember the weight of the bags). Hope this helps. Dec 8, 2014

Scarlet R: Yes, sand can be put on both sides. In fact, I have found after my grandchildren have been using this for over a year, it is best to use either just sand or just water on both sides. Having both in the box can make a really big mess. My grandchildren have used this box a lot, and have lots of fun. Dec 8, 2014

Margie: Thanks Scarlet. I've been contemplating buying a sandbox for my grandchildren but after reading about the problems with bugs and the importance of having a tight cover, I think putting sand on both sides of this table would be a better idea. I appreciate your reply. Dec 9, 2014

Beverly K: Our family put tinted rice in both sides rather than sand. We think you could probably use sand on each side. Dec 19, 2014

Elizabeth K asked: We're enjoying the included accessories, but why no cars? The sand vehicles we have are too wide for its roads and, as you should know, girls need their cars (or anything with wheels). Anyone found some that work for this and work in sand too. There are lots of small cars for indoor use (e.g. wheelies, hot wheels), but the sand would ruin them. Step 2, add some cars to this! May 28, 2013
Answer this · Send to friends Good question? Yes (0) No (0)
Step2Staff: I believe the width of the train is greater than 2 inches. It is plastic, however, so it would work in the sand without getting ruined. I have purchased some small cheap plastic motorcycles for my son at the store Five Below. I think that may be your best option and it is a really good idea. Thank you for letting us know of accessories that could make this more enjoyable for future purchasers. Jun 6, 2013

Elizabeth K: Thank you! If you develop a new accessory pack with cars and some more mini sand toys would be great too, please feel free to let me know so I can order it. With the exception of a couple minor things like not having cars, we love the table. The accessories that came with it are great. For example, those little pot shaped toys that come with it are great for making mini sand castles! Thanks for your assistance! Jun 6, 2013
Step2Staff: We do not have anything that is specifically created for this set. We do have other accessories available for purchase through our Customer Service Department but we do not have cars. We do have a train set that may work with this Sand & Water Activity Center. Please call toll free 1-800-347-8372 Monday - Friday, from 8-5 ET and we will be happy assist you. Jun 6, 2013

Elizabeth K: Thank you for the quick response. They would love a train, but is it made to work in sand? If so, I'll be calling! :) But if not, the sand and water would ruin it quickly. There are lots of little toy cars and trains on the market (e.g. hot wheels, wheelies) and lots of larger sand vehicles, but we need something small enough to fit (<2" wide) on the roads that will also hold up in sand and water. Thanks for your help! Jun 6, 2013
Step2Staff: Thank you for this feedback. We will be sure to pass this along to our Product Development team. Jun 6, 2013

Elizabeth K: So, what you're saying is that you don't have any cars for this, even a set we could buy separately as an add on accessory pack? Jun 6, 2013
Elizabeth K asked: Step 2: Where am I supposed to store the umbrella while not in use (when the cover is on the table)? We just got this today and the kids love it, but I can't see having to get the umbrella out of the garage everyday. Thanks! May 26, 2013

          Cindy T: Hi Elizabeth,
I bought two of these for the early childhood dept. at our church. Unfortunately, I don't have a good answer for you about storage. We store all of them in a storage closet, with the umbrellas laying on a shelf in the closet. You may be able to buy an inexpensive outdoor umbrella cover and put it on while not in use either still attached to the table or detached and laying under the table while not in use. Just a thought.....

Elizabeth K: Thanks for trying to help. I figured it out and thought I'd share for anyone else having this confusion. I suspect I would have known the answer all along had I been the one to unpack it from the box. If you take the two umbrella pieces apart (easily done), they tuck inside, under the hump of the cover. I put them inside a bag to avoid getting covered in sand. May 28, 2013

Margaret K: Ours is on a covered back porch so we have never used the umbrella. And it actually stays in our garage. I guess you could close it & just lay it underneath? Sorry, not much help :( May 27, 2013

A shopper asked: Hi, how does this table differ from the Adjustable Sand & Water Table that you sell? It is more expensive than the other table. Does it have additional features, is it a better table? Jun 6, 2013
Answer this · Send to friends Good question? Yes (0) No (0)
Elizabeth K: These were the two we were choosing between too. If you look closely, the legs on the adjustable table take up space, whereas the naturally allows sand/water/play on top of the legs and to the edge. Also, I think the measurements were a couple inches larger each direction too. And, the naturally umbrella is 60" and adjustable only 40". These are two big reasons we chose the naturally. Plus, the adjustable only adjust 4", with a top height only 2" higher than the naturally, so they're both short enough we'll probably get some little stools to use with it. I hope this helps! From looking at the 2 products the adjustable table holds 10lbs of sand while the Naturally playful holds 20 lbs. so maybe it's deeper since it can hold more. For that reason along I'd spend the extra few bucks. Our 6 and 2 yr olds love this and spend a lot of time w it. Great purchase! Jun 6, 2013

A shopper asked: Does the sand have to dry out completely before replacing the cover to avoid bacterial growth? Just wondering how others manage to do this since my daughter loves to play with wet sand to make castles etc May 2, 2013

Antoinette C: As this is being used in Seattle with lots of rain we used small pebbles not sand , this has worked well . We did have sand in for a while but with group play it went everywhere , the small rocks drain well so no problems. May 2, 2013

Elizabeth K: We're in the same boat because dry sand just isn't fun. We've only had it a few days, but I've already left it off to dry in the sun and I have a feeling that will be a regular thing. I just hope those neighborhood cats don't find out. :) May 28, 2013

Vincent K asked: There is water inside the table. Moving the table, I can hear it moving around. I removed the two drain plugs on the bottom, Tipping the table toward either end will drain. However, since the drains are not at the ends of the table, there is a accumulation of water at the ends. Laying the table flat doesn't work either. How do you complete drain the water from inside the table?
          Thanks

Step2Staff: If your product is accumulating water, you can drill a ¼ hole on bottom away from any seam line, tip it and this should drain out the water. If you have additional questions about this process please call toll free 1-800-347-8372 Monday - Friday, from 8-5 ET and we will be happy to assist you. Jul 21, 2014

Caisy G asked: I would like to know if you sell taller legs for the Naturally Playful Sand and Water Table. We bought it for our daughter last summer and she loves to play with it still, however, she is getting tall and could reach it easier if it could be heightened somehow. Do you make/sell any legs that are comparable with this table and would let us adjust the height? Mar 3, 2014

Step2Staff: Caisy, unfortunately the legs that originally come with this water table are the only legs compatible with it. Mar 4, 2014

A shopper asked: A recent storm snapped both ties on the lid so there is no way for us to play with the sandbox and leave it out overnight. What a pain it is to drag in to our garage each and every time! Is there anyway for us to get replacement ties or is there something else that you could suggest to fix the problem? Thanks! Harry M asked: Are the legs adjustable? Many complaints re: water leakage?

What is difference in size between this and the Adjustable Sand & Water table?

ALYSSA O: No the legs are not adjustable. There is a little water leakage, if you don't tighen the drain enough.
I don't know the difference in the two tables.
