We purchased this swing set in June 2012. We wanted to get my son, who was 20 months old at the time, some outdoor toys for the summer. I did EXTENSIVE research online for plastic play toys for toddlers and eventually I narrowed it down to the little tykes adventure gym and this set. This set was a little cheaper and it had all of the same features as the little tykes one.
My husband and my dad put it together in about an hour, not hard, but you will need more than one person. You do need to drill some of the plastic holes a bit more but it really is no big deal. I was a little concerned that my son would be too small to climb the ladder but we showed him how to a few times and he was fine. There are handles on the side of the play house to help little ones pull themselves up to the platform. The set is sturdy, and durable. It is easy to clean. The slide actually goes pretty fast. We were worried that it would be less fun for our kids since it was a smaller slide, but it is fine. We did add two baby swings 9( have an infant too) and they hooked on easily. I do wish that these smaller sets came with at least one baby swing. Like I said, I researched EVERY plastic and some metal sets out there and this was what we bought and I am very happy with our purchase. My son plays on it every time we go out in the yard and that is what I hoped would happen!
I will note that this is a Toddler set. I would not recommend this to kids who are over about 7 years old. When our kids are older we will upgrade to a wooden set but for now this is perfect.

I read many reviews that said the same thing and I was hoping this wouldn't happen to us - but we finally received the swing-set after three weeks of waiting, and it was missing directions, all screws and bolts and any tools it comes with to assemble. Right now it is in pieces on our lawn. Very disappointing and hard to explain to a 2 year old! I know it's a mistake and it does not affect the quality of the set itself, I suppose it's more of a customer-service issue. Otherwise looks ok - definitely smaller in person than what I was expecting from the picture. Step2 - take your customers' comments into consideration and pay more attention to what you are and are not sending us!!

I like the design and colors. I just wish the installation instructions were easier to follow and that the hardware wasn't all grouped into a few bags but put into bags that go with each step.

    Great swingset, not great delivery

Comments about Step2 Play Up Gym Set™:

The swingset is great. We purchased it for our daughters first birthday along with the toddler swing. She is already climbing the ladder and loves the slide and the swing and the clubhouse. Perfect size and attractive looking. Very pleased. Assembly took about 2 hours. My husband did it himself and I only had to jump in to hold a couple of pieces in place for him. He did say the instructions weren't great

Delivery left some to be desired. It came quickly which was great. They called to schedule it and said I could leave a note saying where to leave it and they'd take care of it. They didn't leave it where I said to, the boxes were slightly mangled and they cracked one of the pieces which we didn't see until assembly and we don't plan on disassembling to replace it.

My two kids love this toy! We bought a toddler swing for my one year old and that was easy to add on. My four year old swings and yells, "this is amazing!" I prefer this swing over wooden ones. We had a wooden one at our old house when my daughter was young and we battled with splinters, wasp nests and dangers. This swing set is safe, fun and wasps do not like to nest in hard plastic.

Tanisha A: The age range for this set is 3-6, and I bought it right before my twins turned 6. Unfortunately, neither of them were able to stand fully upright inside the little hut, which I measured at about 42" floor to ceiling. At the same time, neither of them were tall enough to get into the swings by themselves, either.

I would say that the upper age of 6 is overly generous for this set, and to be prepared to either buy longer rope for the swings or to help your little one get in and out of the swings every time.

Answer this · Send to friends Good question? Yes (0) No (0)
Annette D: I can't answer about Florida sun, as we live in NY, but ours has been up for a year and it looks great. Our son loves it! It's been up through a hot summer, a snowy winter, and a lot of rainy days. I haven't noticed any fading, and we took the swings in for the winter (we also have a separately purchased infant swing for now). Last summer I had to remove the beginnings of what I think was an intended bee or wasps' nest on the underside of the "canopy", which I'll be checking again this year. Nothing to do with the set itself, of course, but worth mentioning since I'm writing about it. Good luck! Apr 26, 2013

A shopper asked: I see the dimensions for the swingset, but how much total area would you recommend for the overall footprint? We are redoing our backyard and setting aside an area specifically for this. I was thinking about a couple feet on each side, does that seem reasonable? Jun 23, 2013
Answer this · Send to friends Good question? Yes (0) No (0)
Theresa S: Seems like along the back and right side we have 2 feet of space since we almost NEVER go in those areas…..we have much more along the front (for swinging and sliding room…. Maybe 5 feet) and more room on the left side for climbing up maybe 3-4 feet). Definitely need to take into consideration where the the slide is going, so the child has room to slide off. Jun 25, 2013
Reply to Theresa Good answer? Yes (1) No (0)
Annette D: We live in a borough of NYC and don't have a big yard -- I think it's 16' wide where we have the swing set (it faces he same way as it appears in the product description); we have about 2-3' feet on either side. We have a tree behind it and about 8' of grass at the end of the slide. It works well for our small space, which is what I needed. Good luck! Jun 24, 2013
Reply to Annette Good answer? Yes (0) No (0)
Eltjo P: I think a couple feet on each side is good. You need enough room for the children to swing safely and room for you to push them, if necessary. I would also make sure that here is enough room near the steps, so that if they were to fall, they wouldn't bump into anything. Jun 24, 2013
Reply to Eltjo Good answer? Yes (0) No (0)
Robert C: Add 2' to the left and right sides, 2' in front of the slide, and 4' in front and back of the swings so you don't get kicked. The slide sticks out about 2' already. Also, you'll need plenty of space for setup. There are lots of large pieces, and the box itself is huge. Jun 24, 2013

cindy h: Yes, we removed one swing and put up a baby swing. It is very easy to do. My only complaint is the clubhouse part where they can climb up to the slide or play with the steering wheel. The steering wheel is hooked onto a bar, so it's open on the top and bottom. My son, when he was 1.5 years old, leaned over the steering wheel bar and fell over the top. When he landed he must have hit his head because he had a grass stain. I took hom to the doctor as I was scared to let him nap. He could have been hurt really badly, but we got lucky and he was not. Wish th was a solid wall without openings. Other than that, I've been happy with it. Apr 7, 2013

Dennis V: I would not totally disassemble it if you don't need to. Perhaps removing the top vertical bar would be enough, and then you could transport the playhouse and the opposite A-shaped piece. Maybe you can also detach the slide from the playhouse.

You don't need to dig into the ground other than the 4 metal u-shaped stakes you should hammer into the soil.

The grass underneath the unit will likely need to be re-seeded or new sod put in, but that's no big deal.

Jennifer L: The set is actually set into the ground with stakes. When I had it installed the tech said it would be fairly easy to pull the stakes up to move it. We will be moving in about a month or so and will know for sure then. I do not believe it will ruin the lawn. Apr 24, 2013

        theresa i: Dear Sarah.

Our set is on top of real grass. I would think if your fake grass is set on top of dirt the stakes should penetrate through the fake grass into the ground. However, I'm not an expert, and this is just an opinion. I can tell you my grandchildren love the set.

        Good Luck!

Mark R: As long as the stakes can penetrate trough the "sod" layer of the fake grass, it shouldn't be an issue. You could always use a hammer to help get them in. To be honest, we don't even use the stakes with our set and have had no issues with instability! (And I have a 3 and 2 year old boys!) hope that helps Oct 28, 2013
