We got these playmats to make a play area in the unfinished section of our basement (after an explosion of new Christmas toys). This was a great find because it fit the area we wanted to cover exactly. I had done a lot of online searching through the mats available out there, and these definitely seemed the best: much thicker than the standard 3/8 inch or even the "upgraded" 5/8 inch; 24 inches square versus 18 or 12 for less seams; and without the punch out pieces to get lost or let dirt it. The price of this 20 pack is by far the best buy also.
We love our new play area, these mats keep the cold from the basement floor away amazingly well, they feel warm if you sit on them. And the thickness is perfect, they are soft enough to protect little ones if they fall, but still firm enough to make a great play area for cars, trains, games, puzzles, etc. Much better than playing on carpeting. In fact, after we finished laying them down in the basement, we came up and ordered another set to expand the play area.
The only bad thing is, they can be a little slippery. I think they even leave a little bit of slippery residue on your socks after you walk on them. Coming off of the mats onto the cement floor, I have almost slid once or twice. Also, they are not meant to be used on wood floors, it says they can discolor them, which is not an issue for us, but I don't remember seeing that mentioned in the product description. I have seen different reviews saying these are both too soft and too hard, I don't agree with either, I think they are just right. Our one year old plays on them, and I don't think a fall on these is any worse than on a carpeted floor, much better than on hard wood.

These are v. useful mats. I bought them for hardwood floors for my baby who is learning to crawl right now. They are great, but not unlike the ABC mats. I think I am disappointed because I was expecting something different. The only difference is that it is one piece and does not have the pull out letter/numbers. I thought these were going to be firm but cushy. My mistake. Still useful and until there is another product out there, good for what you need.

Comments about Step2 Playmats - 20 piece set:
If I was putting a floor into a commercial building, I would want to use these for underlay. They are a bit too slick to use as stand alone in a full size, full speed facility but fine for a practice area in the house.

This is so useful when my nieces & nephews visit -- I don't have a big place and this makes it easier to keep them in the area that's safe and child-proof.

Comments about Step2 Playmats - 20 piece set:
I'm in the Army & saw these at the local PX. I bought (2) 4-packs for use in my room for cushion of my dumbbells & the cardio exercises. These are great for this purpose as they protect the floor from the weights & are a good cushion for the knees etc when doing the jumping & whatnot exercises.Only drawback I can think of is I saw similar items on [@]& they offered "edge" pieces that locked in & made the edges straight.....which would be a nice addition/option
