We got these playmats to make a play area in the unfinished section of our basement (after an explosion of new Christmas toys). This was a great find because it fit the area we wanted to cover exactly. I had done a lot of online searching through the mats available out there, and these definitely seemed the best: much thicker than the standard 3/8 inch or even the "upgraded" 5/8 inch; 24 inches square versus 18 or 12 for less seams; and without the punch out pieces to get lost or let dirt it. The price of this 20 pack is by far the best buy also.

We love our new play area, these mats keep the cold from the basement floor away amazingly well, they feel warm if you sit on them. And the thickness is perfect, they are soft enough to protect little ones if they fall, but still firm enough to make a great play area for cars, trains, games, puzzles, etc. Much better than playing on carpeting. In fact, after we finished laying them down in the basement, we came up and ordered another set to expand the play area.

The only bad thing is, they can be a little slippery. I think they even leave a little bit of slippery residue on your socks after you walk on them. Coming off of the mats onto the cement floor, I have almost slid once or twice. Also, they are not meant to be used on wood floors, it says they can discolor them, which is not an issue for us, but I don't remember seeing that mentioned in the product description. I have seen different reviews saying these are both too soft and too hard, I don't agree with either, I think they are just right. Our one year old plays on them, and I don't think a fall on these is any worse than on a carpeted floor, much better than on hard wood.

These are v. useful mats. I bought them for hardwood floors for my baby who is learning to crawl right now. They are great, but not unlike the ABC mats. I think I am disappointed because I was expecting something different. The only difference is that it is one piece and does not have the pull out letter/numbers. I thought these were going to be firm but cushy. My mistake. Still useful and until there is another product out there, good for what you need.

We bought these to put under other Step 2 play products. My daughter has a very small yard and these took the place of grass. After flattening out a large area we installed the mats; they have worked beautifully!

              Is this formamide-free?
              A shopper on Jun 19, 2013
BEST ANSWER: Question for Step2 Staff: Have these playmats been tested for Formamide, Acetophenone, and 2-Phenyl 2-Propanol? If so, what are the test results?
Is the product rated for a fall height?
              Frederick N on Sep 12, 2013
BEST ANSWER: Hmm. not sure what your intentions are with this mat....they are thick enough to help soften the fall of a child learning to walk...but not much more than that. We have hard wood floors, so I covered our play room with these mats for a soften place to sit and play etc....they work out very nicely for this purpose!
I was wondering how this works with furniture on it, since I plan to cover the whole playroom. Does furniture leave indentations? Will I be able to move and rearrange pieces on it?
              A shopper on Jul 21, 2014
BEST ANSWER: I have my living room floor covered with the playmats, but I placed them AROUND the sofas and armoire so that I could cover a larger space. I have a slide, activity cube, and other big toys on the mats and I can easily move them around with no problems. Walking with high heels on the mats leaves indentations, so i'm sure that heavy furniture would do the same. These mats are fabulous. I've used them for over 2 years with twins. Very durable! Easy to clean and have helped cushion lots of falls!!
According to the description, these mats are not recommended for hardwood floors...why?
              A shopper on Jul 23, 2013
BEST ANSWER: Hi, I don't know the exact answer to that, but I'm guessing that you would risk some moisture buildup under the mats that could cause discoloration of the floor. I don't think this is specific to these mats but rather to covering a wood floor with rubber or plastic that doesn't let the floor breathe for an extended period of time.

              Hope that helps!
I am looking for soft flooring to use as they base for our outdoor swingset. I have read reviews on these mats and have found that some people have used them outdoors and left them out all year round with no problem. I would be covering a 30' x 30' area. Do you think these will hold up?
              Kelly I on May 26, 2013
BEST ANSWER: I double my mats because they cover a driveway and they are under two Step 2 climbing structures. I probably have over a hundred of them (some were used). The plain ones are slippery when wet. I do not have the newer ones with the holes but I would recommend those for under any place where there will be lots of water. Mine have been outside for 4-5 years. They are fine except where the neighbor cats use them for a scratching post. Some will put blue coloring on the kids clothes. Most will not. I haven't figured out why that is. It could be that the cats scratching the surface have removed some kind of protective surface.
The edges of the mats will allow dirt and rocks to slide under. I just sweep under the edges of the mats and they are good for another year. (I live under oak trees). My tallest climbing structure is 4' and I think a fall from that height would have a soft enough landing. You'll have to judge based on what material is underneath your mats and how high a fall might be from a swing set. Hope this helps. (Child care provider.)
Do you sell edges for these mats? I am worried my daughter will trip and fall unless there is an edge that gives a bit of a ramp.
              kbfBK on Apr 9, 2013
BEST ANSWER: No they don't, but I used them for daycare on vinyl flooring and the kids did great. The early walkers had trouble at first but then as they grew, they got used to the edge and didn't trip.
What are the levels of EVA for these playmats?
              Grace M on Mar 28, 2013
BEST ANSWER: I have no idea what an EVA level is. Perhaps if I know what that is I can answer your question. We love the mats. We use them outdoor. They have held up amazingly well. They really protect our kids.
Do the Step2 playmats contain Formaldehyde, Lead, Phthalates, BPO, or anything else toxic or harmful to humans?
              Samantha S on Jul 5, 2014
BEST ANSWER: These playmats are made of EVA (Ethyl Vinyl Acetate) and do not contain silicone nor flame retardants. Phthalates are plasticizers mainly used to soften and enhance the longevity and durability of plastics, typically PVC plastics. Current testing technology cannot defect zero levels of phthalates. When the level of phthalates falls below an independent test lab's ability to detect the presence of phthalates the lab issues a report stating that the phthalate levels are undetectable, or passes the CPSIA phthalate requirement. Many toy manufacturers use these reports to make the claim their products are "phthalate free". Step2 chooses to make the accurate statement that our products are compliant to the CPSIA phthalate requirements as independent, CPSIA test labs cannot and will not state a product is "phthalate free." The soft plastic materials used in our products are routinely tested and are compliant to the CPSIA phthalates standards.

To check the Confirmation of Conformance on, you can visit our website at www.step2coc.com and type in the name of the product and it will give you specifics on testing.
Why does it say there are small parts? What makes this dangerous for children under 3?
              erinm on Jul 30, 2013
BEST ANSWER: Although no small parts come with this playmat or are provided for assembly this product it has been age graded for children 3+. Normal use and abuse testing conducted suggests through biting, torque, and tension a small part of foam could possibly detach. That is the reason for this this warning.
can you order different colors or does it just come in blue?
              A shopper on Apr 24, 2013
BEST ANSWER: We also carry a "designer" version of these playmats that are slightly smaller. They are 23 x 23 instead of 24 x 24. We are currently out of the 24 piece set (6 sets of four mats per set) but here is a link to the 4 piece set http://www.step2.com/p/Designer-Playmats-23-x-23 . If you would like to be notified when the 24 piece set is back in stock, please visit http://www.step2.com/p/Designer-Playmats-23-x-23-6-pk and select "Notify Me".
              Is this product ASTM approved?
              A shopper on Mar 28, 2013
BEST ANSWER: ASTM does not test and approve products. However the playmats are tested and comply with the ASTM F963 Children’s Toy Standard as well as CPSIA requirements for children’s products.
