Crafting with the kiddos is a great way to spend some quality time together. Today’s craft will help the kids become aware of a very important holiday – Earth Day!
Earth Day began in 1970 as a movement to give voice to environmental issues. Forty-six years later, Earth Day has become the largest civic observance in the world with more than 1 billion Earth Day activity participants each year.
As parents, and residents of this incredible planet, it’s our job to protect the Earth for our children and future generations. What better way to share the importance of this day than with a fun and easy craft?
What you’ll need:
- Coffee Filter
- Washable Markers
- Toothbrush or Spray bottle with water
- Glue
- Construction Paper
- Paper towels
Earth Day Coffee Filter Craft
- Smooth out and flatten the coffee filter, then place a piece of paper under the coffee filter so that when you start to color, the markers won’t bleed through onto your table.
- Draw continents on the filter with your green marker and oceans with the blue marker (we used a globe as a guide since high school Geography class was over a decade ago and we were a bit rusty).
- Once the filter is colored in, lay it in a dry sink (we used a stainless steel sink for easy cleanup).
- Wet your toothbrush with water or fill your spray bottle with water. Then, gently flick or spray the water onto the filter and watch the colors bleed together!
- When you have achieved the perfect look, remove the filter from the sink and place it on a few layers of paper towels. Let it dry for an hour.
- When dry, use a few small dabs of glue to attach your Earth to some colorful paper.
