I bought this bed in 2007 after my son (2 years old at the time) had a difficult time transitioning from the crib to a small toddler bed that I had previously bought. He would sneak into our room after we were fast asleep and end up sleeping the night with my husband and me. We would wake up every morning and discover that he was once again in our bed instead of his. So we decided that he would probably sleep better in a bigger bed. While shopping for a bigger bed for our toddler to sleep in, we saw this bed and brought it home. We assembled it and realized that we would need our power tool to get some of the screws in, which wasn't a big deal to us (meanwhile he was taking a nap in our bed). From the first time my son saw this bed in his room, he was elated. From that first night we had this bed in his room, he has slept peacefully in it. This was a relief since we did not have to wake up with little feet in our aching backs. My son will be 5 in september and he loves this bed. We had to transition from the toddler mattress to the twin mattress (at the end of 2009) because he had gotten to tall for the toddler mattress. He loves it even more, even without the race track for him to play with. It is now his big boy bed and he even makes his bed up everymorning. This is a great buy! I don't even mind using a power tool to assemble it. It's not some flimsy peice of plastic. We are military and we have assembled and disassembled this bed plenty of times and it is stil just as sturdy as when we first had gotten it. A very happy customer with this Step2 product.

Got this when my son was three. He loves it. The stickers look great and he's added more so it's more his bed. We used it with a toddler mattress. We did have issues with the gaps on the sides of the crib mattress. We used rolled blankets or stuffed animals to fill in the sides. Another downside is that now that he's moving to the twin size mattress, I can't find one with the required height of only 7". All of the innerspring mattresses I've looked at are eleven or twelve. The mattress companies I've spoke with said they don't even make them that thin. It should say that it requires a bunk bed mattress. That or redesign it to fit common mattress heights. If I had known the 7" height req, I would have gone with something else.

Comments about Step2 Stock Car Convertible Bed:

I never write reviews but really like these beds. My twins have had these beds since they were 24 months and crawling out of their cribs. The raised edges act like side rails so they feel safe, smooth edges so no injuries while wrestling around the room. But are still cool when they are 7. Even though they are plastic, they are super sturdy and have held up through a move and 5.5 years of 3 boys jumping on them. I was beyond impressed with these.

Comments about Step2 Stock Car Convertible Bed:

We wanted to get a twin size bed for my little toddler. He is 2 years old. We were giving away his crib to someone else who needed it. This bed was the perfect answer to giving my son a cute little bed. The cost of a regular twin size bed was in the same price range. The plus side to this bed was it's ability to accommodate a toddler / crib size mattress. We did not have to run out and purchase a twin mattress right away. We will wait until the toddler mattress can no longer be used. So the only expense we had was the bed itself. It came in a HUGE box. At first glance it looked to be fully assembled and we were worried how to get it up the stairs in our small cape house. Once we opened the box we found it had to be put together. The bed is colorful and fun and very sturdy. The little racetrack on the end of it is really cute. I tend to shop around a goof bit for the bet prices and surprisingly it was the best deal from the manufacturer direct. Other places although advertised for cheaper, charged over 100.00 for the shipping and handling. I had a coupon online for free shipping from this site and the shipping was only 25.00 as opposed to the other places which charged an arm and a leg. Do not be fooled. Buy straight from here. Hope this helps. My son loves his bed! I think my son will love this bed and have it for many years. At least another 10 years. Put it this way. My almost 13 year old son wanted it too! :)

Comments about Step2 Stock Car Convertible Bed:

We bought the bed for my 4 year old Grandson who loves anything to do with cars. It is the type of bed that can be used into early teens. We also bought it to encourage him to stay in his own bed for the night. He has slept through the night in his race car bed for the past three nights.

          Service and delivery comments:

Right now I really cannot think of any suggestions with the exception of the decals. My son-in-law found them difficult to apply correctly.

Allison C: The directions that came with the bed show you how to convert it. You can also download them again right from the Step2 site. You have to remove the "head" of the bed and pull out the wood boards and place them on top of the frame in order for it to support a twin size mattress. It was fairly easy to do. Apr 7, 2013

Ziyad T: First of all, you need to remove all screws at the back and remove the back part. Then you install the racing track in the middle and both wooden plank on each side. Put back the back part. Thats it. Apr 7, 2013

Kristine G: We just took the toddler mattress off and placed the twin bed where the toddler bed went. It's been like that for about 3 weeks now. This is what I was told when I called toys r is since they sell the same bed. If its incorrect please let us know as well. Apr 7, 2013

katy k: We did that too when we first changed mattress size but as my son has gotten older the mattress seems to sag with his weight & he says his back hurts. We just fixed it the correct way and it seems to not be sagging in more hopefully this will also help his back because he loves this bed! Apr 9, 2013
Kristine G: How do you fix it the correct way so that we can do that? What did you out down under the mattress Apr 9, 2013
katy k: Thank You everyone that answered! I found the instructions online, I knew part of it had to come apart but I wasn't sure how the boards were suppose to go. We had them wrong of course maybe that is why the mattress seemed to be sagging where my son slept. Apr 9, 2013

          Susan R: Hi Marianne,

I am using this with only a twin size mattress.

I definitely do NOT recommend using this with a box spring. There is not enough depth within the "car frame" to stack a mattress on top of a box spring and have it look nice. Looking at the picture on the website, the height of the mattress is based on the mattress sitting on the support with NO box spring.

It works fine for us without a box spring.

We are very happy with this bed.

          Hope this helps!

Margaret G: We bought a twin foam mattress which is perfect - and our grandson can jump on the bed without it being like a trampoline (foam absorbs the jump and springs allow rebounds that can get scary with an active 4 year old.) May 23, 2013

Jennifer I: We have just the mattress and it fits perfectly in the bed if you added the box spring the whole mattress would be above the car. May 13, 2013

Shellini S: Hi! We used a twin size mattress that we bought from Costco / BJ wholesale. For several months before we bought the twin size mattress we used the same mattress from his crib and he played with the "racetrack" part of his bed. I wish I had exact measurements. But if you are able to go onto the BJ website I am pretty sure they will have their mattress size listed on there. :-). Hope this helps. I know we are using twin size bed sheets and NOT the XL twin size. Aside from that we have had the bed for 18 months and he loves it and we do too. It is one very well made solid piece. Apr 15, 2013

Margaret G: We purchased the bed for our grandson last year and bought the twin size foam mattress from Amazon. The foam mattress is about 39 X 75 X 6 and works very well with it. Our daughter loves that the foam mattress doesn't rebound the way a spring mattress would so Marcus can jump on the bed without it being a trampoline. PS Marcus loves his bed and his dad says that it's really comfortable. In fact, Daddy went to sleep on the bed reading a bedtime story - Marcus came out to his mom to complain that "Daddy is in my bed and won't get out!" Apr 17, 2013

Marcus Da Briel C: We have used two different twin mattresses, the first one fitted tighter than the one we are currently using. I do not have the dimensions of the first, but the one we are using now measures 36"x72". The fit is good it just higher than the one we used first. The twin mattresses vary according to the make and brand, what we are using now is a Serta. Apr 15, 2013

Margaret G: It is the size of the inside of the bed without the mattress, it is press board--probably about a 1/2 inch thick. But I will have to measure to get the dimensions right. Will do that this weekend and send an up-date. May 23, 2013
